Monets Green Reflections Essay Since the dawn of time, man has been inspired by the beauty of art. The Macquarie Concise Dictionary describes art as the production or expression of what is beautiful, appealing or of more than ordinary significance. I interpret the word art to refer to the physical reproduction of the artists own perception of the world around them. A masterpiece is defined as a consummate example of skill or excellence. Therefore, when in search of a masterpiece of the artistic category, we must take into account the proficiency and dexterity displayed by the artist. With these basic principles in mind, it is my belief that one cannot surpass Monets series entitled Waterlilies and more specifically the painting Green Reflections. I have adored the Waterlilies series for a number of years. It was its originality that first appealed to me. Green Reflections is my favourite due mainly to the use of the green colour to indicate darkness of the water. The painting seems busy, yet not overpoweringly so. There is much for the eye, while allowing room for personal interpretation. Visually appealing, Green Reflections is a classic example of Monets personal style, being both scientific and painterly. This particular painting has captivated many admirers with its pretty pastel colours, prevalent in many of Monets works. The yellows and pinks of the lilies are in strong contrast to the deep blues and jungle greens of the water. Monet brought the study of the transient effects of natural light to its most refined expression, through the Waterlilies series. Therefore tone is an important aspect of the painting. It is used with great success, giving the appearance of shade on the right hand side. The tone also gives the impression of water reflections. The Waterlilies series was a number of paintings of the same lily pond. The defining characteristic of Green Reflections is that it was the only one of the group painted at night. Monets fascination with light and colour was the fuel behind this concept. Being an impressionist painter, very little of his works used line and shape. Green Reflections is no exception. Irregular patterns are prominent with little regard for structure and realism. The only way Monet could capture his version of the truth of the moment was through lying. Monets method made accommodations to his underlying philosophy of instantaneity and attention to decorative elements. Monet attempted to reconcile the idea of capturing a moment and his supposition that all moments must contain absolute truth through the use of a harmony of colours. Monet was considered an early pioneer of the impressionist era. The word impressionism is synonymous with the likes of Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley, all associates of Monet. He was tutored in his early years by French painter, Eugene Boudin. Boudin passes on to Monet his love for nature and taught the young artist not to be afraid to break the rules. Monet often spoke of his education with Boudin: My eyes were finally opened and I understood nature; I learned at the same time to love it. It was due to his informal training, that Monet never complied with conventional techniques of the era. In 1874, with a group of artists called the Independents, Monet organised an exhibition in which a number of paintings were viewed by the public for the first time. The group was labelled the Impressionists as their work seemed sketchy and unfinished. Despite the incompleteness of his work, the boldness of his colour and the extreme simplicity of his compositions, Monet was recognised as a master of meticulous observation. An artist who sacrificed neither the true complexities of nature nor the intensity of his own feelings in achieving a goal. Monets technique developed over many years. By the mid-1880s Monet, generally regarded as the leader of the impressionist school, had achieved significant recognition. It was with this new-found fortune that Monet purchased the property at Giverny, just outside of Paris. Green Reflections was painted in 1906, on this property. His garden was a splendid juxtaposition of colour, lush over-growth and dense foliage. The exotic plant and wildlife that thrived in this handmade sanctuary were the focal point of Monets work towards the end of his life. The usage of a metaphor tries to convey the fact that his burst of softer emotions is surprising, as he has presented his intense, and angry side, the narrative suggests that his presence is not human like, more like a machine. Alliteration helps to pinpoint this And he smeared his ragged rough sleeve over his eyes. Pips fear of him is mixed with pity, pitying his desolation, and watching him as he gradually settled down. The convict had obviously invented the young man to frighten Pip. Their relationship has shifted at this point-its a landmark. Magwitch doesnt act violently towards Pip (although he when he hears about another convict he gets angry-suggesting a mysterious connection between them), although the element of violence is still mentioned. He shivered all the while so violently and He was already handling mincemeat down his throatmore like a man putting it away somewhere in a violent hurry, than a man eating it. This shows us that Magwitch has indecisive violent qualities. Magwitchs almost unsettled state is highlighted again. His manners are compared to that of dogs. The politeness of Pips sympathetic conversation with the convict is an attempt to normalise an abnormal situation, but also, as recognition of the convict as a fellow human being. He is becoming somewhat comfortable with the situation now. Pip: I was glad you enjoyed it (the food Pip bought for Magwitch). Magwitch even thanks Pip, thus creating a noticeable change in their relationship-it is significant. Pips initial referral to Magwitch as my convict shows that an emotional bond/relationship between them is felt and has formed incomparison to previous fear. Pip leaves Magwitch to work on his leg-iron with the file, whilst he runs back home (for Christmas). In Chapter 4, at the forge an abundant dinner is held. Pip has got a guilty conscious, and is feeling terrified that his theft will be discovered. The tar-water that Pip substituted for the stolen brandy is drunk, and the pork pie cant be found. When Pip finally runs for the door but is met by a soldier bearing a pair of handcuffs. We are faced with the worrying question will Pip be arrested for his act? This end on a note of suspense reminds us that Dickens was writing to please a wide audience. In chapters 5-6, we learn that Joe is asked to repair the broken handcuffs. Edmund is reluctant to take a test to ascertain his health condition for the fear of traumatizing his mother. He suffers but perseveres it for his mother’s sake. He says: promise not to worry yourself sick and to take care of yourself (ONeill, 23). O’Neill’s work is full of tension. James’s house is full of suspicion. In Act II, Edmund accuses his brother of being suspicious over everything. The characters in the play contribute to the dissonance. Jamie’s suspicion causes tension in the house. John Stuart Mill Essay Moral theories try to explain what distinguishes right actions from wrong ones. The theory of utilitarianism tries to do the same by incorporating several aspects that set up a moral standard to help investigate the balance between right and wrong. John Stuart Mill, a British philosopher of the 1800’s defends the utilitarian school of thought by pointing out what it is that makes utilitarianism the standard theory for morality. According to Utilitarianism as explained by Mill in his essay â€Å"In Defense of Utilitarianism† the fundamental principle of morality is the promotion of happiness on a scale that benefits an individual and the ones around him; also to promote pleasure and to prevent pain. Several major objections are raised towards the moral theory of utilitarianism some examples can be the idea that the theory asserts too much emphasis on pursuing pleasure which makes it a doctrine worthy of swine (â€Å"Defense†). Another objection is that in everyday circumstances it is impossible for humans to make a morally just decision (â€Å"Defense†). An additional counter-argument that struck me the most was the statement that utilitarianism sets standards that are deemed too high for humanity (â€Å"Defense†). What this objection projects are the predisposed and unwarranted capabilities of the human race. According to this statement humanity is made comparable to other (lower ranking) species that lack the intrinsic values that make us humans human; like thinking faculties that are much superior to other animals or the ability to have languages or develop intricate cultural systems, just to name few. Therefore, making this objection a weak one and one that displays an inferior and subjacent view towards the principle of morality. Mill on the other hand deduces the true motives of these objections and labels these ideas as being of such nature that promote actions in accordance with one obliging to a certain duty. If that is the case then individuals can be comprised of nothing but a niche in society. He argues that ethics holds the responsibility of outlining our duties, fulfilling them is dependent only on factors that promote the larger well being of a society. Mill states such objections as misapprehensions and transcribes an important point which nonetheless reconstructs and fabricates the idea of utilitarianism; he states this affirms that the motive has nothing to do with the morality of the action, though much with the worth of the agent. † (â€Å"Defense†).
